Der Struwwelpeter
With Christmas right "around the corner"... I completed a lifelong goal of purchasing an antique German version of der Struwwelpeter. Circa 1920. I read it to my cats before bedtime lol. Love the illustrations in this thing. Anyone else on here read these as a child??  ·  ·  ·  · |

Cool find. I've seen the book a few times but never read it because they were in German. The pictures are very funny though. Here's what Wikipedia says: Der Struwwelpeter ("shock-headed Peter" or "Slovenly Peter") is an 1845 German children's book written and illustrated by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each cautionary tale has a clear moral lesson that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Der Struwwelpeter is one of the earliest books for children that combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, and is considered a precursor to comic books. Der Struwwelpeter is known for introducing the villainous character of the Tailor (or Scissorman) to Western literature. Some researchers now see the stories in the book as illustrations of modern child mental disorders. |

Cute that you read to your cats ! I didn't read a book for my cat Buster, but made a kind of story up for him called Space Cat to read to him which grew over the 12 years we were together. It wasn't written down, I just made up new episodes each time but the characters were the same. |

Das ist ein ganz normales Buch hier bei uns in Österreich...was soll daran so besonders sein? Ich lese es meinen Kindern als gute Nacht Geschichte oft vor.....typisch prüde Amerikaner  |

Yes, American mainstream kids' books are overprotective. They avoid subjects like death and serious injury. American cartoon characters return from the dead unharmed. I think that is why Der Struwwelpeter is intriguing to Americans as a children's book. When the children are a little older and get into comic books, e-games and Hollywierd movies, then things get violent in a hurry. |
