David Liittschwager's Plankton Sample Off Kona, Hawaii, September 20, 2006
Photographer David Liittschwager collected the marine plankton off Kona, Hawaii, on September 20, 2006, while aboard the NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette. The organisms came from a single dip of a hand net and were concentrated in a petri dish, backlit and photographed at about twice life size. The sample included at least nine species of copepods, along with fish eggs, crab larvae, arrow worms, marine worms, cyanobacteria and diatoms. The photograph later circulated with a caption describing it as a single drop of seawater magnified 25 times. It was neither a single drop nor magnified at 25 times life size.

I used to do this for the University of North Carolina: That is the result of dragging a plankton net, concentrating the critters. |
