The 15-year-old who police say admitted to stabbing his grandmother and fatally stabbing his cousin will be tried as an adult.

Josh Keyzer appeared via video in an Allegan County courtroom Thursday afternoon to be arraigned on one count of open murder and one count of assault with intent to commit murder. His parents and a number of Michigan State Police troopers were in the courtroom.

The stabbings happened Wednesday afternoon at a home in the 3000 block of 10th Street in Wayland Township.
According to court documents, Sharon Keyzer called 911 and said she had been stabbed by her grandson Josh and that he was still at the house.

When police arrived at the home, they found Josh on the roof.

“He was acting very unusual when he was first observed up on the roof,” MSP Lt. Patrick Boyd said.

Josh was covered in blood and holding a knife, according to the documents.

He refused to come down from the roof and eventually lost his footing, falling to the ground before trying to run away with the weapon. Police chased him, used a Taser on him and took him into custody, the documents said.

Police found Sharon Keyzer in a bedroom inside the home with a blood-soaked towel wrapped around her neck. Her clothing was also covered in blood. She told officers Josh had stabbed her, according to the documents. Josh’s cousin, 21-year-old Kassandra Keyzer, was found stabbed to death in the basement.

In another room, officers “did find a young boy and he was sleeping,” Lt. Boyd said.

Police say that child was Kassandra Keyzer’s son. He is not believed to have witnessed the attack on either woman, Boyd said.

Sharon Keyzer was taken to a hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment. She underwent surgery and was upgraded to serious condition Thursday morning.

Josh was also hospitalized for unspecified injuries before he was taken to jail. The severity of those injuries wasn’t released.

Police have not yet indicated a motive for the attacks.

“We aren’t far enough to make those determinations yet,” Boyd said.

If convicted of murdering his cousin, Keyzer would spend the rest of his life in prison.
