Re: Continuous Elevators In Germany
A paternoster (name derived from the "our father" prayer and continuous chain of rosary beads) is a primitive form of elevator - I don't think new ones are allowed. It eliminates the need for a start/stop system, and either an operator or an automated "floor selector/stop at the right point" mechanism - in the late 19th/early 20th century, that would be either an ongoing expense, or an incredibly complex system. Also, given the technology of the time, they were the only way (short of a goyem operator) to build an elevator suitable for Orthodox Jews (not allowed to do work on the Sabbath - most extreme interpretation didn't even allow pushing an elevator button/turning on a light switch). Modern elevators have a "sabbath mode" that can be enabled - stops at every floor on the way up, then at every floor on the way down, repeat cycle until switched to a different mode.
