Re: City Rat Hunts and Kills a Pigeon

I don't think most people realize how carnivorous rats are. Mice are the ones who eat seeds and a few insects.

Rats are far more predatory. If you have a rodent infestation at your house, it will only be rats or mice, not both. They will chew a hole in another animal, if permitted.

Rats eat mice.
Opossums eat rats, snakes and other "non friendlies".

Re: City Rat Hunts and Kills a Pigeon

That folks is why you never feed pet rats meat. Pet rats are loving little creatures but they can be vicious killers too. They are the rodent PitBulls.

Re: City Rat Hunts and Kills a Pigeon

That's like saying "never feed your dog meat". It's part of their natural diet and they need it. Feeding any type of food does not lead to aggression in rats or dogs. That's not how that works.

Re: City Rat Hunts and Kills a Pigeon

I have had many many pet rats, and when they get the taste of blood they get very aggressive, and are prone to biting. It's like when a shark smells blood, they bite at almost anything. Maybe if you raise your rats eating meat it may be different but I know the few I did see who had meat regularly still were way more aggressive. All mine were lovers....(No meat)

Re: City Rat Hunts and Kills a Pigeon

I think they're ok if they get a balanced diet. Too much of something "special" can turn them into eager addicts.

I live in the mountains of Virginia. I have an opossuum that comes every night to dine on the barn cats dry food.... You are correct, he does keep the "non-friendlies" population in check :))))

Chewed a nice, bloody hole in that pigeon.
