Chippewa Lake Park, Ohio: Abandoned After Its 1978 Closure
Chippewa Lake Park operated beside Chippewa Lake in Medina County, Ohio, from 1878 until 1978. Edward Andrews opened the site as Andrew's Pleasure Grounds, a picnic ground and beach. The amusement park later added rides including the Big Dipper, a wooden roller coaster designed by Fred Pearce in the 1920s. Continental Business Enterprises, which had owned the park since 1969, closed it during its centennial season amid competition from Cedar Point and Geauga Lake. Afterward, the Big Dipper's lift hill, track, station and tunnel stood in dense vegetation alongside abandoned ride structures, a booth and a rusting pickup truck. The ballroom burned on June 13, 2002. Demolition began in 2009, and the Big Dipper was gone by June 19, 2010, although several rides remained standing. A proposed private redevelopment collapsed in 2012. Plans announced in 2020 called for the property to become a Medina County Park District park with wetland restoration.
