Did she actually take the infant's pulse at 4:52?!

It seems like she is checking for breath and a pulse,
Looks like they may understand the beginnings of medicine. Fascinating! Also very sad but she exhibits no signs of grief, which suggests she thinks the child could still be alive.

I've once read that this "tapping the forehead" with the hand that she performs multiple times actually IS a gesture of grief in chimpanzees.

Re: Chimpanzee Mother Learns About Her Dead Infant

As much as I don't like primates, there is no denying their intelligence, and empathy. Clear signs in this video of the mother checking for signs of breathing by resting her hand on the chest, looking and listening at the mouth, and possibly even feeling for a pulse on the neck and the arm though I'm less convinced of that.

Re: Chimpanzee Mother Learns About Her Dead Infant

Definitely looked like she actually checked for a pulse! And I think she WAS showing signs of grief. It seems they do understand death in a way. Wonder what the baby died of, it seems to be bent in half with it's legs over it's head? Or am I seeing things!!

Re: Chimpanzee Mother Learns About Her Dead Infant

I'm seeing arms over the head. He probably choked on something. Yeah, I swear she could do CPR if somebody showed her.
