Re: Chernobyl and Pripyat (1986 Nuclear Accident)

As the years pass by people forget about Chernobyl, or never even hear about it at all. It is still a monstrous blot on the history of Russia, and the worst part is they seem to be trying to hide it.

Just how many of those poor disfigured, distorted people are there, living in squalor and misery, with nothing coming in from the government, no support or medical care??

Re: Chernobyl and Pripyat (1986 Nuclear Accident)

i was hoping this topic came up. i have a friend who is a nuclear engineer, and he sent me this link to a damned great documentary.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...ernobyl&hl=en#

its a long vid at 1.5 hours but describes in great detail on what exactly happened, how they contained the fire and how they built the sarcophagus.
404. That’s an error.

The requested URL /videoplay was not found on this server. That’s all we know.

Certain parts of Pripyat will be uninhabitable to Human life particularly near reactor 4's remains for 250,000 years.
Other parts are inhabited by the older generation who lived there before.
I remember the event it was 16 days after my 17th birthday.

It was four days after my 6th, although I don't remember it. I remember my kindergarten teacher telling us about the Challenger disaster however.

Re: Chernobyl and Pripyat (1986 Nuclear Accident)

My mom and I were just talking about this at work. She was telling me about how three or four men offered to go in and seal up the reactor to prevent anymore radiation from escaping and they did that knowing full well they were going to die. I might have the facts mixed up a bit cause that was a few hours ago, but I'm pretty sure I'm close. I also remember seeing a video of a chopper flying over head to dump something on the site. Forgot what that was, but the radiation or something caused the engine to fail and the chopper to crash. I think I might do some more reading on it. Nice post though.
Yes even today any more than a minute or two in certain areas of Pripyat is enough for several lifetimes worth of radiation.
