Centurion C-RAM 20mm Gatling Gun Firing at a Deployed Base
A Centurion C-RAM system opened fire from behind blast walls at a deployed military base. The trailer-mounted weapon sent a dense stream of red tracer fire into the dusk sky as its gun traversed, producing a curved line followed by a small flash at the far end of the stream. Centurion, also called the Land-based Phalanx Weapon System, is the U.S. Army's counter-rocket, artillery and mortar version of the Phalanx close-in weapon system. It uses a radar-directed 20mm M61A1 six-barrel Gatling gun capable of firing 3,000 or 4,500 rounds per minute. Its M940 multipurpose tracer ammunition is designed to self-destruct at about 2,300 meters so missed rounds do not fall intact on surrounding areas. |
