A Canadian woman named Jessie and her leashed dog, Skoki, had the encounter on a gravel trail near Mount Engadine Lodge in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Jessie managed to stay calm, slowly backed away, and firmly commanded the bear to go away without running, which wildlife experts note prevented a full attack.

She ultimately distracted the bear by throwing her coffee mug at it. As the bear investigated the mug, she and her dog darted into a camp tent while other campers shouted to scare the bear away. Neither Jessie nor her dog were harmed.

She did not have bear spray because she only planned to step away from her camp for a five-minute walk.

She bearly survived...

It hurts and scares to say it, but if it had been me, in a place like this I would probably have had my dog unleashed (if I had one).

So... Yeah
It would have went much, much worse I think.

Thinking of it, bears (and other potentially dangerous wildlife) are not even a concern in my neck of the woods, if I knew it was a possibility maybe I'd behave differently. But still.

Great, now the bear has discovered coffee

Zoos actually use coffee grounds as a form of behavioral enrichment for captive bears. When keepers scatter coffee grounds in their enclosures, the bears often react like cats with catnip, sniffing, rolling around and playing in the scent.

Ground coffee, instant coffee packets, and whole beans must be locked inside a hard-sided vehicle, a bear-proof canister, or a park-provided bear box. Never leave them sitting on a picnic table or inside a tent.

It's funnier when he's outside, but if it's necessary...

A bit too close for comfort. Damn!!!

Bear seeing a “meal of opportunity.” She handled the situation pretty well.

I call bullshit. If she was Canadian, she would have been apologizing profusely while attempting to scare him off.
