Calcott Hall: Georgian 'Red Dress Manor' in Powys, Wales, 2013
Calcott Hall is an early Georgian country house built about 1720-25 in the Four Crosses area of Powys, Wales, near Llanymynech and the English border. The house was designated a Grade II listed building in 1953 and became known locally as Red Dress Manor because of a floor-length red dress left hanging from an upstairs wardrobe. Photographer Dan Circa documented the house in October 2013. A framed portrait inside shows a woman wearing the same dress with white gloves. Other rooms retained old family photographs, furniture, bottles, handbags, a television, a washing powder box and other household possessions. The building showed extensive deterioration, including damp rooms, broken windows, fallen plaster and a collapsed tiled fireplace. Calcott Hall was later placed on the Buildings at Risk register. Sale listings have advertised planning consent to restore the house and convert its barns into as many as seven homes. |
