Bullet Through Apple Photograph by Harold Edgerton (1964)
Harold "Doc" Edgerton made the Bullet Through Apple photograph at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964. The image shows a .30-caliber rifle bullet passing through a red apple, with pulp spraying from both sides. The apple rests on an upright brass cartridge casing placed on a wooden block against a deep-blue background. A microphone detected the gunshot and activated a delay circuit, which fired an ultra-short microflash at the required instant. The flash lasted about one-third of a microsecond, freezing motion too fast for the human eye to follow. Edgerton, an MIT professor and pioneer of strobe and stop-action photography, used the image to illustrate his 1964 lecture "How to Make Applesauce at MIT."
