well the hunger strike didn't topple the empire, but it gave sinn fein some impetuous to start a political campaign which in fact has made it the largest political party in all of Ireland. The hunger strike was the spark that led to a new way of thinking and helped pave the way to negotiations down the road and the eventual peace process. yes, he was a political prisoner like the others, and many served sentences under internment, without a trial...which is immoral. hey if the british take your land, create their own laws, and treat you like 2nd class citizens then you have every right to use violence to stop the discrimination.
