Bigfin Squid Filmed 7,828 Feet Deep in Gulf of Mexico, November 11, 2007
A Shell remotely operated vehicle filmed a bigfin squid in the Gulf of Mexico on November 11, 2007, while working at the Perdido development on Alaminos Canyon Block 857, about 200 miles off Houston, Texas. The vehicle recorded the squid in 7,828 feet of water. The green-tinted video frame shows the pale squid suspended above the vehicle, with its fins spread and its exceptionally long, thread-like arm filaments trailing through most of the image. Bigfin squid belong to the genus Magnapinna and are distinguished by arms and tentacles that bend sharply like elbows before extending into long filaments. The genus was formally described in 1998 from captured juvenile specimens, although adult bigfin squid remain essentially unknown from collected specimens.
