Bennett College's Halcyon Hall in Millbrook, New York, Demolished 2021-2022
Halcyon Hall in Millbrook, New York, was demolished between September 2021 and 2022 after decades of vacancy and failed redevelopment efforts. The 200-room Queen Anne building was constructed in 1893 as a luxury hotel, but the hotel closed around 1901. The Bennett School for Girls, founded in Irvington in 1890, moved into the building in 1907 and later became Bennett Junior College and Bennett College. The women's college went bankrupt and closed in the late 1970s. Before demolition, the deteriorating campus contained dormitory rooms with peeling plaster, collapsed ceilings, exposed lath and holes through the floors. Its surviving features included grand wooden staircases, long corridors, classrooms with old desks, bathrooms, fireplaces, an auditorium and a leaded-glass window. Redevelopment proposals repeatedly failed after the college closed. The property was purchased in 2014 for a planned park, and controlled demolition proceeded with asbestos abatement because the structure was considered too unsafe to enter. No college building remains on the site.
