I watched this, very grim but captivating.

Re: Ben: Diary of a Heroin Addict

This really hits home for me. I have a sister who has been battling a heroin addiction for 9 years. She very much reminds me of this guy Ben. Right now she is in prison because she could not kick it.

Re: Ben: Diary of a Heroin Addict

That was very moving, although it took a while to watch; it really reminded me of an old friend at times so I had to stop & take breaks to actually hyperventilate a couple times. You just want to reach back in time and save them. Poor Ben and his lovely family.

Poor Ben. I wish there where some sort of program that was strong enough to save these addicts who want to stop but just need to absolutely be forced and refocused. One that is free to those who need it.

Re: Ben: Diary of a Heroin Addict

I had two friends who died of heroin overdoses fairly recently. As much as the documentary intrigues me, I will pass on this one.

Induced coma, rapid naloxone detox and stabilization of the patient for a period of 48 hours, is one possible treatment. It isn't widely used though, nor does it have a great success rate.
However, there is some speculation that maintaining a patient in a coma for a longer period (2 weeks+ ) may yield better results. Unfortunately it isn't feasible to test the theory though, given the high risks. Additionally, it doesn't address the psychological aspects of addiction or the patients potential predisposition for drug abuse.

Re: Ben: Diary of a Heroin Addict

Someone please tell me why it is written in the medical books and all over the internet that opiate withdrawal is unpleasant (understatement of the millenia) but not fatal when it most certainly can be lethal? The way we treat opiate addicts is an abomination. No other patient would present at the ER severely shitting and puking kime, dehydration, anorexia, tremors, seizures, muscle contractures, etc etc, and be shown the cold judgmental dont give a flying fuck stone cold face of censure. Addiction is a disease and to have such a plethora of addiction naive docs writing, denying, undertreating severe pain, and withholding adequate treatment for addiction is just so wrong. I hope to God that the young docs coming up now are better educated and empathetic so maybe a few Bens can be nipped in the bud or saved in time. Very very sad situation. RIP.
