Awesome Elevator/lift in My Home Town!
Why have I only just found about this? It's called a paternoster lift/elevator and it's in the Attenborough Building at the University of Leicester. I wonder if they let you have a go if you're not a student there?

I'm amazed that thing doesn't bankrupt the university just for the liability insurance on it alone. ![]() That said, it does appear to be a unique elevator indeed. ![]() |

Re: Awesome Elevator/lift in My Home Town!
Sadly the lift is going to be decommissioned. ![]() Historic Attenborough Tower Leicester University lift to be removed An iconic part of Leicester University is set to be retired as it has come to the end of its working life. The historic Paternoster lift in the Attenborough Tower will no longer be in used at the university. It's a much-loved part of the campus, but the university is having to take it out of action. The historic elevator is one of only a few left in the country but as it can longer be maintained, it's having to be replaced. It was once jokingly nicknamed the 'death elevator' - but incidents of injury in paternoster elevators are few and far between. A university spokesperson said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform the University community that we are going to have to retire the Paternoster lift in the Attenborough Tower. "As those of you within the Tower know, as one of only a few left in the country, the Paternoster has been a much-loved, and well used part of the University campus for a long time now. "We have done our best to maintain and update the lift, but unfortunately it has reached the end of its working life. "We’ve looked at a range of options and thought carefully about this, but it would be both impractical and uneconomic to attempt to fix it or replace it as spare parts for Paternosters are no longer available and need to be manufactured each time they are needed." The university is planning to remove the Paternoster and install a new lift in its place, however that work is not set to be completed until September 2018. Maintenance work is also going to be carried out on the other lift in the tower over the Christmas and Easter holidays. The spokesperson added: "We’ve tried to choose a time where there is the least likelihood of disruption, however while the work is taking place the Attenborough Tower will be closed for the university closure days, and no access will be permitted for Health and Safety reasons." As the university prepares to say goodbye to the historic elevator, it is going to commemorate it and is looking for Leicester alumni to share their memories of the lift.
