http://www.documentingreality.com/fo...me-line-45276/ On May 3, a line of showers and thunderstorms tracked into the Northland from the Tasman Sea, bringing unsettled weather to much of the region. The Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited (MetService) mentioned the possibility of strong thunderstorms being embedded within the line, producing small hail and gusty winds. Significant upward motion in the atmosphere developed in the region surrounding Auckland, prompting the MetService to issue a high-risk of thunderstorms in the area. With low-level wind shear and helicity, the possibility of tornadic activity was present. At 2:55 pm NZST, a hook echo was apparent on the weather radar, indicating strong rotation and a likely tornado.[49]
Several minutes later, around 3:00 pm NZST, a tornado struck the Auckland suburb of Albany. With winds estimated at 125 mph (201 km/h), the tornado ranked as a high-end EF2 and caused considerable damage along a 3.1 mi (5.0 km) long track in the area.[50][51] Several cars were tossed up to 20 ft (6.1 m) in the air by the storm and pieces of iron roofing were reportedly seen 300 ft (91 m) above the ground.[52] A total of 50 homes sustained varying degrees of damage along the tornado's track.[53] The most severe damage took place at a local shopping mall where large portions of the roof were torn off. One person was killed and at least 20 others were injured here.[52] Damage estimates from the storm were places in the tens of millions.

Two Killed As Tornado Rips Through Auckland, New Zealand (2 May 2011)
A tornado has roared through the New Zealand city of Auckland, killing at least two people and injuring several more.
It touched down around 1500 (0300 GMT) in the city's Albany area and then moved south, felling trees and tearing roofs off houses.
Cars were overturned by the tornado, which left a 5 km-long (3 mile-long) trail of damage.
A roof was also ripped off a shopping centre in Albany, local media said.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown said that the death toll could rise. "We've had two confirmed fatalities, it's absolutely disastrous," he told local media.
Witnesses described debris flying though the air and cars torn from the ground as the slow-moving funnel passed.
"There's probably six or seven seriously damaged cars, and I saw cars flying off the ground about 30 meters (100 feet) in the air," shop owner Hamish Blair told the Associated Press news agency.
New Zealand's Stuff news website said that at least 18 people had been taken to hospital.
Police warned local residents to stay inside until the weather settled.
