The artist made this performance as a protest against colombian guerrilla. He chopped his finger off, then sprayed his blood over the word "FARC" painted in the wall. After that, he swallowed his finger and finally spitted it up.
He made this performance in June 2002, 4 months after the guerrilla kidnapped colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, who was finally rescued by security forces six and a half years later on July 2008.

Artist severs finger in kidnap protest

A French performance artist has shocked the Colombian nation by chopping off his own finger with an axe in protest at a high-profile kidnapping.


Pierre Pinoncelli, who is famous for his outrageous stunts, committed the act of self-mutilation at an art museum in the city of Cali on Sunday.

He said he was paying homage to Ingrid Betancourt, a candidate in last month's presidential election who was kidnapped by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas in February.
