Anatoli Bugorski Face After U-70 Proton Beam Accident, Protvino, 1978
Soviet physicist Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski was checking malfunctioning equipment on the U-70 synchrotron in Protvino in 1978 when a 76 GeV proton beam passed through his head. The beam entered through the back of his skull, crossed his left middle ear and exited beside the left side of his nose. Bugorski later said he saw a flash "brighter than a thousand suns" but felt no pain. The accident paralyzed the left side of his face and left him deaf in his left ear, where he experienced persistent tinnitus. He also developed occasional partial seizures and rare tonic-clonic seizures. His intellect remained largely intact, although he experienced increased mental fatigue. Bugorski completed his doctorate and continued working at the Institute for High Energy Physics as an experiment coordinator. A medical illustration traces the beam's path through his head, while an undated later portrait shows him after the accident.
