This is the amazing moment a herd of elephants turned their trunks into snorkels to cross a deep river.

The group of mammals wandered into Africa’s Chobe River on the Botswana-Namibia border but became submerged.

So they simply put their trunks out of the water to enable them to breath.

Tourists Kate and Marcus Westberg, both 29 and from Queensland, Australia, photographed the amusing elephant scene.

Kate said: “Twice they ventured into the water, only to turn back.

"There were calves and the adults got agitated when a herd of buffalo followed too closely behind.

“Just before it got dark, they made a final attempt to cross.

“With only the tips of their trunks sticking up like snorkels, the submerged bodies of the adults formed a protective circle around the calves.

"The group arrived safely on the Namibian riverside.

“What was fascinating was the interaction between elephants and buffalo.

“Both wanted to cross the river and keep their herd safe, but there wasn’t enough space for all of them at the crossing point.

"So the buffalo had to turn back.”
