Photographers Ian Ference and Katherine Westerhout documented abandoned institutional and industrial buildings across the United States between 1998 and 2009. Ference contributed 11 photographs, including interiors at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Hospital, Taunton State Hospital, Creedmoor State Hospital, Trenton State Hospital, Buffalo State Hospital and Fort Totten Army Hospital. Westerhout contributed 14 photographs from psychiatric facilities, factories, a prison and a church. Her locations include Kings Park Psychiatric Center, Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna, Spaulding Fibre in Tonawanda, Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia and a Protestant church in Detroit. The photographs show empty wards and corridors, flooded floors, abandoned furniture, industrial equipment, prison cells and architectural remnants. Did you see the movie, Born on the 4th of July? The young soldier, in the Vets hospital, with no arms and legs, just sitting, staring out of the window. Just a brief glimpse of him as the camera passes by, but the look on his face tells you all you need to know about him and his future. |
