Abandoned Hotels and Cable Car on Yashima, Takamatsu, Japan
Most of the bubble-era hotels in Yashima's mountaintop tourist district had closed by about 2000 after development outpaced demand. The district stands on a plateau about 300 meters high in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, and includes Yashima-ji, temple 84 of the Shikoku pilgrimage. The Yashima Cable Car opened in 1929 but lost traffic after a road was built up the mountain. Service was suspended on October 16, 2004, and the line formally closed on August 31, 2005. The photographs, taken after the suspension, show a cable car parked beside the station, an overgrown incline, closed shops, stocked shelves, abandoned trolleys, hotel buildings and an electrical substation. Several hotel buildings had been demolished by late 2011. The temple remained open, and the mountaintop aquarium reopened under a new name in 2006. The area was later redeveloped with a mountaintop park and lookout building.
