Abandoned Home for the Abandoned
Welcome to Forest Haven, one of the most deadly institutions in the United States. This asylum for the mentally ill was built not far the nation’s capital in 1925, hidden in forested acreage away from the busy city center. The campus was beautiful, however care and treatment would deteriorate rapidly as the city’s budget tightened. Understaffing issues were common, and for decades reports of resident abuse and neglect went ignored. The District treated Forest Haven like a dark secret nobody wanted to discuss. A combination of budget cuts and lawsuits eventually forced the institution to close in 1991 after 80 years. But before Forest Haven was shuttered, hundreds of residents died and thousands more deteriorated while enduring a horrific quality of life.  · |

Wow, terrible life for people that were forced to live there. It's really shocking that 1/3 of the patients (inmates) weren't even retarded, rather dyslexic, epileptic, deaf or non-English speakers. It's sad that people just cast away family members that can't/won't take care of. Same thing happens for old people when their families put old relatives in nursing homes. |

Read the link. Fucking bullshit! I am bi polar as well as have Dysthymia and generalized anxiety. Had all this shit before it was cool. Not a very functiong person. Do stuff to feel normal, don't work out.Doctors say I'm "fine" pffft, I ask for help/ nada. Sounds racist but, I am white, male ,single, straight, non religious and I have red hair. If I was a fucking ape they would lick my nuts and give me some $ Back in time before we had medication to help all you could do is "put them away" and hope they were treated well. That's just how it was. Wrong, sure, common practice, yes. Understaffed, government. |

great post and brilliant link. Though a very sad read. Not one of those asshole Judge's cared a shit about the residents of that place. Nobody truly helped them.
