Pripyat was an Ukrainian city in the former Soviet Union, made infamous during the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The city of 50,000 people, was literally abandoned over night, after the sudden meltdown of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Due to the seriousness of the disaster, people were forced to evacuate their homes and life, with no warning, never to return. Today, Pripyat stands as it was left 26 years ago. The decay of the city, gives it a haunting feel.

My wife is from that part of Ukraine and we've visited. There are people there 24-7 at the reactor itself, which is an ongoing project. There are guided bus tours available, which are proctored. They actively discourage disturbing anything at the site which is why things in the city look relatively undisturbed. The forests around the city are home to a fair number of people, mosly very elderly and poor, who refused to evacuate at the time or who were driven back to their old homes by poverty and unemployment. The place is sad and crumbling. The forests have reclaimed an awful lot of it...many of the photos you see on the web are 20 years or more old. Still worth taking the bus tour if you ever get the chance.

The abandoned amusement rides always seem to get to me for some reason. Probably because of what Six Flags in NOLA went through after Katrina....
