kind of like a tree, honestly... you could the rings in it's scales. there are other ways but that one is a common method.

Looking at a fishes ring? Sounds like a load of shit to me. Some animals will grow faster than others in the same time frame, things like diet play a large role in this. I don't believe that bigger necessarily means older.

look it up... there are tons of ways to tell a fishes age. scales are one way here is a guide on how to tell a fishes age by scales |

they couldnt have returned it... look at it's eyes, they are bulged out. the pressure change from being pulled up did too much damage to return it. if they had, it would have just died and floated ont he top of the water.

they cant stay upright when that happens and they drown.
