Re: 1984 Bobsleigh Track Sarajevo
Unfortunately this is the case for most Olympic venues. When they plan them they always claim they'll have great after-games public usage and they'll be self-sustaining, but most are simply left to rot and decay. The Games themselves have become little more than a money-grab and then they leave a scar on the landscape...I believe as time goes on and the world financial problems increase, the only way that games will be able to continue will be with permanent facilities which will then rotate the games and perhaps a slpit in profits or shared expenses. As it is several games have driven nations or cities to the brink of bankruptcy like the '76 Montreal games (they were paying off that debt for 30 years), the 2004 Games (costing Greece $1t billion, three times the original budget, and Russia is dropping a staggering $48 BILLION (USD)on the Sochi games for 2014. By comparison, the last Winter Olympics in Vancouver cost about $7 billion and the London games were just $3.3 Billion and China spent $40 on the 2008 games..it's fiscal insanity. |
