Turtle Mountain before and after the slide as well as a recent ariel view of the site, barely touched since 1903.

At 4:10 a.m. on April 29, 1903, a major landslide, the Frank slide, involving an estimated 30 million m3 of rock occurred on the east face of Turtle Mountain in southwestern Alberta, Canada, resulting in the loss of approximately 70 lives (McConnell and Brock 1904). The debris from the landslide covered an estimated area of 2.67 km2.

“Scientists have actually calculated that if you took all the rocks that fell off the mountain you could make a one by six-metre wall that could go all the way across Canada, from Victoria to Halifax, being 6,122km or 3,804 miles. That’s how much rock fell off in the Frank Slide.

It was always a source of fright and amazement as a child on summer holidays, driving through the Crowsnest Pass, and seeing the devastation

It's difficult to conceptualize that much rock sliding off the mountain. That would truly have been a sight to behold...from very far away.

It is something to behold even seeing it today. Very surreal and frightening to be in the vicinity, a visual reminder that the power of nature is immense, as you know so very well.

I love this photo, basically all they did at the time was to clear the railway and that's all they've ever really done.

Here's a link (if you are not offended by links) to an older scanned book that tells the story quite accurately. An interesting little read.

WOW!! Brilliant of you to connect these ideas. I'm certain you've nailed what would have happened had there been water at the base of Turtle mountain.

That whole area is great to drive through, camp, hike, and take tours... Cinnamon Bear Cafe & Bakery is a must-stop every time. Great, now i want a cinnamon bun.

Awesome place to see. They have made a trail through the rocks and at some places your standing on homes covered with boulders that still have the bodies of those trapped and all you see is a little part of the house below you! Over mining of Turtle mountain caused the slide. Highway 2 through Crowsnest pass is a blast to drive through.
