It's been a good year for space explorers as these top 10 pictures prove, capturing the beauty of Earth and the universe.

With everything from the discovery of the astronaut selfie, to Comet ISON's near miss with the sun, there's been a fair few nail-biting moments - but, photograph-wise, the results are stunning.

An astronaut captured Super-Typhoon Haiyan from above on November 9, and the picture shows the storm's huge scale in stunning clarity.

Other colourful snaps show what happens when two stars get too close together in orbit.

And amateur astronomers have proved their talents by focusing in on the sun's fiery surface.

Meanwhile a cloud of rainbow colours in a starry sky shows the remnants of a supernova in space - quite a collection for one year.

On Dec. 24, 2013, NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins, Expedition 38 Flight Engineer, participates in the second of two U.S. spacewalks, spread over a four-day period, which were designed to allow the crew to change out a faulty water pump on the exterior of the Earth-orbiting International Space Station. He was joined on both spacewalks by NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio, whose image shows up in Hopkins’ helmet visor.

in fact it broke up in several (4 or 5 large) pieces due to heat which causes massive gas release, so "survived" is overstatement

but what is so misleading on this pic is that it is a time photo
so you see not 1 comet with tail but the vails and tails or the rubble.
