The murders took place on July 1, 1981, at 8763 Wonderland Avenue, in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles. This location was known to be a drug house associated with the Wonderland Gang, a group involved in the narcotics trade.

The victims were four members of the Wonderland Gang: Ronald Launius, William Deverell, Joy Miller, and Barbara Richardson. Each was found bludgeoned to death in the house. The brutality of the murders was shocking, with the victims suffering severe head injuries inflicted by a blunt object.

There was one survivor, Susan Launius, the wife of Ronald Launius. She sustained severe injuries but managed to survive, though her memory of the events was impaired.

John Holmes, a well-known pornographic film star at the time, was implicated in the murders. Holmes was known to have had connections with the Wonderland Gang and was allegedly involved in drug dealing and other criminal activities. His handprint was found at the crime scene, placing him at the location of the murders.

The investigation into the Wonderland Murders was extensive, with Holmes becoming a primary suspect. In 1982, Holmes was charged with the murders but was acquitted in 1982 due to a lack of concrete evidence and the inability of the prosecution to conclusively tie him to the murders.

Despite the investigation and trial, the case officially remains unsolved, with no one ever being convicted for the murders. The lack of definitive answers and the high-profile nature of the suspects have contributed to the enduring mystery and fascination surrounding the Wonderland Murders.

The 1997 movie Boogie Nights is very loosely based on the life of John Holmes including some of the events related here. The Wonderland Murders are depicted in the 2003 film Wonderland, starring Val Kilmer as Holmes.

Great post, kel. I'm quite familiar with this case. The B&W photos are not easy to find. OK, now that you mentioned "Boogie Nights," all I can picture is Alfred Molina wearing speedos and a bathrobe singing "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger. (Not that that is a bad thing.)
