The decision to abort the mission was made, and Komarov began his re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. However, the spacecraft's parachute failed to deploy properly, causing the Soyuz 1 to crash at high speed into the Earth's surface. Komarov was killed instantly upon impact, making him the first human to die during a space mission.
