Video From The Aguas Blancas Massacre in Mexico
On June 28, 1995, the Aguas Blancas Massacre tragically unfolded in Guerrero, Mexico, leading to the deaths of 17 farmers and injuries to 21 others. The victims, members of the Organización Campesina de la Sierra Sur, were ambushed by motorized police on their way to a protest in Atoyac de Álvarez. The protest aimed to secure the release of activist Gilberto Romero Vázquez and to demand essential services. The police, who filmed parts of the massacre, claimed self-defense and were accused of staging the scene. The incident spurred the creation of the Popular Revolutionary Army and led to the resignation of state governor Rubén Figueroa Alcocer in March 1996 amidst allegations of high-level involvement and misconduct.
