Ambassador Stevens died from smoke inhalation sustained while waiting for the US Marines and his personal Libyan bodyguards to fend off the attack of the Bad Guys. Being over-powered and preparing for retreat, at this point the Marines declared him "missing", but his personal security knew otherwise; he was hiding out in a Safe Room built into the villa. Before back-up from Tripoli arrived local sympathetic young adults searched the burnt-out buildings and indeed found the Ambassador, who was at that point barely alive.
They had to carry him a good distance to a hospital, and when the Tripoli Marines arrived they were told by locals where the ambassador was and all they could do officially was guard the hospital where he unfortunately had died.
My sources are simple to find: the pictures are no more than stills from a film-makers video that's easy enough to find on YouTube and there's a well-researched article in The Wall Street Journal.
The director of the video said that he felt bad for the "..man's body" being moved and carried but there "was no other way" to get him out of there, he said.
It's a good thing, at least, that they got to him before the Bad Guys returned. Then all the things certain people have suggested should be done to the persons who were actually trying to help him really could have happened to Chris Stevens.
FOX News broke the "rape" and "sodomized" story, if I recall correctly.
