Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on Donald Trump during an outdoor campaign rally in Butler Township, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Crooks fired up to eight rounds from the roof of a building outside the secured perimeter, striking Trump's right ear and hitting three spectators. A US Secret Service counter-sniper killed Crooks on the roof within about 26 seconds of the first shot.

Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed. David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were seriously wounded and survived. The FBI identified Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, and said he acted alone. Investigators found that he had extensively planned an attack and focused on the Butler rally after it was announced, but they did not publicly establish a motive. Agents recovered crude explosive devices from his car and home, along with a bulletproof vest and loaded magazines from the vehicle. A later bipartisan House investigation found failures in planning, communications, execution and leadership by the Secret Service and its law enforcement partners.
