The Station Nightclub Fire - Feb 2003
OH. I've also done research into why people weren't just yanking people out of the crowd crush. It was something I could never understand, because they were mostly just standing there. They did save a couple people, but for the most part no one got out. The reason you can't just pull from the top is because it's not like crawling over stationary rocks. Even the people on the top are stuck, because underneath them are a bunch of squirming worms. Feet and hands get caught underneath and you can't just yank them off, it takes strength. Worse, they are freaking out. Just like people who are drowning don't calm down, and end up taking their would-be savior with them, if you watch closely, they (especially the ones on the bottom, who are not only stuck but being crushed) are clawing at the people trying to help. They're almost pulling them in. So unfortunately it's not as easy as it seems like it should be. Finally, why weren't the firefighters spraying the crowd crush with water? The crush is burning and they aren't doing anything! Well, that's kind of true, but there's nothing they can do. What eventually happens with a fire is that it becomes so hot that it quickly turns the water into steam. This is eventually overcome, and not an issue in most structure fires. But since the thing burning is a massive pile of people, spraying them with water would subject them to horrific and potentially deadly steam burns before the fire was out. I'm guessing that's what the FFs were thinking. What they need, I think, is a massive amount of dry powder. But I'm not an FF so someone else can join in on that. |
