Thank you for this great set. It's horrible to see the side effects that has come.

It reminds me of a little village in Vietnam that was attacked with something called Agent Orange. Now, about 40 years later, many of the people have a rare disease called NF1 (Neurofibromatosis type 1).

So I think this is just the beginning for the people in and around Chernobyl

My Grandfather was present at over 200 Nuclear weapons and was over radiated by 100 times what is acceptable. I am so blessed I am able to live a semi-normal life, although I have tons of crazy medical issues. All of my cousins have strange medical problems as well.

I remember getting a National Geographic magazine in the early 90s? but the kids affected by radiation looked more photogenic than included above. (I found one such image)

The above images in the op are really affecting and I don't think I could care for them. The people who look after such people deserve the riches of a oligarch.

What is it in radiation that causes such a hideous elephantiasis-like swelling of the extremities? I know lethal levels of straight gamma radiation poisoning destroys a cell's DNA, preventing the ability to replace old cells for new (causing all layers of skin to literally shed itself with no replacement of new cells and the same for internal organs) but what happens to the cells to cause that terrible and permanent swelling?
