The Rosewood massacre was a horrific and racially motivated attack that occurred in the first week of January 1923 in the small, predominantly Black town of Rosewood, Florida. This tragic event, which resulted in the deaths of an estimated six Black residents and two white residents, is a stark reminder of the racial violence that plagued the United States in the early 20th century.

The violence in Rosewood began after a white woman in a nearby community, Sumner, falsely claimed she had been assaulted by a Black man. This allegation set off a chain of events leading to mob violence against the Black residents of Rosewood. White mobs from surrounding areas, inflamed by the accusation and seeking retribution, descended on Rosewood, looting, burning homes, and violently attacking the Black residents.

Many Rosewood residents fled into the nearby swamps for safety, hiding for several days. Others were sheltered by sympathetic white neighbors in the area. The town of Rosewood was completely destroyed during the violence, and its residents were permanently displaced.

Ummm no but is was an inspiration for the film "Rosewood". I read the death toll was much higher for blacks and I wonder how the whites died.

Actually, that crossed my mind as well. I feel like I've read somewhere that the book was based on SOME case, but not sure what. Gonna have to try and find that.

It is interesting that the height of the KKK was not during the reconstruction period after the civil war nor the 1960's but was the 1920's, when racial theory also took a much larger hold in Germany.
