Chase's killing spree lasted for a month, from late December 1977 to January 1978. During this period, he brutally murdered six people, including men, women, and children, in a series of home invasion attacks. His modus operandi involved shooting his victims and then mutilating their bodies, including drinking their blood and performing acts of necrophilia. These gruesome actions earned him the macabre moniker of the "Vampire of Sacramento." Born in 1950, Richard Chase displayed signs of mental illness from a young age, with a history of disturbing behavior. His mental health deteriorated significantly in his adolescence and early adulthood, leading to several psychiatric hospitalizations. Despite this, Chase's violent tendencies went unchecked, culminating in his deadly rampage. The police investigation into the murders was intense and high-profile, given the sheer horror and inexplicability of the crimes. Chase was arrested on January 27, 1978, after a series of clues, including fingerprints and bloodstains, linked him to the murder scenes. Upon his arrest, police discovered evidence in his apartment that irrefutably connected him to the crimes, including bloodstained clothing and items belonging to the victims. In 1979, Richard Chase stood trial and was found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder. The court proceedings highlighted his severe mental illness, but he was ultimately deemed legally sane at the time of the crimes and was sentenced to death.
