Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
I was being insensitive since none of this is relevant to me and I'm not involved in online video games the way the were crying and weeping on video seemed funny to me (or like they were joking) Its wrong on my part because I cannot sympathize or understand recording your self crying so people know your sad. But I'm guessing these people spend a lot of time interacting with eachother on this game and have built actual relationships and this is just normal behaviour since this is the way they communicate. (If i were to record myself mourning it would be a ego trip since I don't record myself doing anything but the context of these guys recording themselves would not be the same intent as If I were to do it. Sorry for your guy's loss. Next time I'll leave the keyboard alone and think twice before making a joke about the way people mourn their dead.

Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
In many ways, Rekful was like the Kobe Bryant of World of Warcraft. A household name that when spoken, would automatically be associated with a role model who was not only incredible skilled, but was humble and wanted to do his part to bring some positivity into the gaming community by using the platform to teach. And because of that, his influence was legendary. Also like Kobe, Byron became rich (a multi-millionaire $3mil+) due to his love for the game and always striving to be the best at whatever it was he was doing. The reactions are coming from people who had a lot of respect for him and are grieving the loss of an icon, like Michael Jordan at Kobe's funeral. |

Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
I am just going to keep posting more things as they come out. This is how he ended his last livestream about a month ago, talks about killing himself and looks to the balcony he would ultimately jump from a few weeks later. This twit longer is his roommate talking about everything leading up to the day he jumped, things like sleeping in front of the balcony door to intercept any attempts. People have been questioning where his friends where. https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sradgv This video was made a few months ago but includes a lot of really good clips of his success.

A crazy guy making a marriage proposal via Twitter to a girl he hasn't seen in 6+ months is what every girl dreams of, right?

Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
Dr.K also warned of a landslide effect where after Reckfuls death, other streamers in similar situations would also start killing themselves. OhLana: A 100k-ish variety streamer killed herself on July 6th after tweeting about depression and her final tweet was "it’s not anybody’s fault". https://twitter.com/_ohlana https://www.twitch.tv/ohlana Blue662: This one was hard to learn about, Blue killed himself on July 4th. He was one of the most popular streamers in GTA RP and played a character called "Boe Jangles". He is responsible for bringing over people like Summit1G and other top streamers to the GTA scene. He did not leave a public final message. https://twitter.com/blue622 https://www.twitch.tv/bLuE622 Summit breaks down talking about Blue who was one of his bestfriends. The community holds a memorial. I know it's not directly Reckful related but I feel like a lot more of these are going to be popping up as a result.

Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
I think this entire "gaming culture" is super unhealthy. I don't know much about it honestly, but you can't live your life, make tangible connections, or process emotions properly if you're spending such an extreme amount of time playing video games. I hate that this young man felt that this was his only option. RIP |

Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
It can definitely be unhealthy depending on the person and their reasons for gaming in the first place. I have played video games my whole life, mostly casual and for fun but I have met many many people over the years that were filling some sort of void or trying to compensate for something they lack in the real world. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with that from time to time but some of these people have been in this state for 10+ years and completely neglect their real lives. Dr.K who has been referenced in this thread is a Harvard psychologist and gamer himself and he has switched his focus from more traditional addiction to helping people in the gaming community. He talks to mostly high profile streamers and every single one of them has some major traumatic event that led them to where they are now in regards of gaming. This is his channel if you are interested at all. https://www.youtube.com/c/HealthyGamerGG

Re: Popular World of Warcraft Player Dead at 31 from Suicide After Proposal
I watched almost all of that first 2 hr video with them. I think it's great that he's reaching out to the community this way. That young man was in a ton of pain, and I hate it. I'm a mental health advocate for sure, so even as this is tragic, I feel a little bit better knowing this man is reaching ppl through his channel and passion for gaming. |
