Police Brutality at Genoa G8 Summit (part 1) - Death of a Young Activist

It looks like he was about to throw that fire extinguisher, or whatever that is, right at the dude with a gun. Dumb move on his part.

The 2001 G8 Summit in Genoa, Italy, became infamous not only for the high-level political discussions but also for the intense and widely criticized police actions against demonstrators. The summit, which took place from July 20 to July 22, 2001, saw leaders from the world's major industrialized nations gather to discuss global economic issues. However, it was overshadowed by massive protests and subsequent police response, which raised serious concerns about police brutality and the violation of human rights.

3rd world country? I don't think so. The carabinieri is Italy's national police force, and they are not to be fucked with.

Re: Police Brutality at Genoa G8 Summit (part 1) - Death of a Young Activist

I know some of the carabinieri who were there that day: they all admit that they lost control, many innocent people were beaten just as a retailation, and especially what happened during the raid on the Diaz school and what happened to the detainees in custody at Bolzaneto can almost be compared to what happened in Abu Ghraib.
But hey! They were devastating the town, they've SURROUNDED a Defender wearing balaclavas/helmets and handling stones, fire estinguishers, crowbars, pickaxes and every other possible type of weapon.
What were supposed to do the carabinieri, to surrender and say "yes, feel free to lynch me (since i'm a third-world-country-cop)"? And you, americanpeace, from a first world country (ignorance DOES exist also in first world countries, you know), what would you have done if you were inside this Defender, threaten to death by dozens of people determined to cause to you as much physical damage as possible, screaming "we'll kill you, we'll kill you we'll kill you"? To call Chuck Norris was NOT an option.

To the OP: thanks for sharing, i'd like to point out that to post the photos of the "poor" carlo giuliani being shot then run over, and don't post photos like the ones below is almost equal to tell only the half of the story.

The dude who is holding that wooden plank, for example, later testified that nothing would have avoided to the carabinieri to be lynched, and with all the due respect for the loss of a human life, isn't it much better to see the body of a criminal on the ground, rather than the one of a 21 y.o. carabiniere?
I 1000% agree that the explanation that "a flying stone deflected the bullet" would come to mind only to some dude high on LSD, especially since in several photos Placanica is obviously aiming straight at him, but this is not the point:
The European Court of Human Rights fully absolved Italy of the death of Carlo Giuliani, See press release no. 257 24.03.2011, and the case was basically handled assuming that he did shot straight at him, or that the alleged flying stone doesn't matter.

In today’s Grand Chamber judgment in the case Giuliani and Gaggio v. Italy (application no. 23458/02) - which concerned the death of the applicants’ son and brother, Carlo Giuliani, during clashes at the G8 summit held in Genoa from 19 to 21 July 2001 and which is final1 - the European Court of Human Rights held:
By 13 votes to four, that there had been no violation of Article 2 (right to life) of the European Convention on Human Rights with regard to the use of lethal force;
By ten votes to seven, that there had been no violation of Article 2 with regard to the domestic legislative framework governing the use of lethal force or with regard to the weapons issued to the law-enforcement agencies at the G8 summit in Genoa;
By ten votes to seven, that there had been no violation of Article 2 with regard to the organisation and planning of the policing operations at the G8 summit in Genoa;
By ten votes to seven, that there had been no violation of Article 2 with regard to the alleged lack of an effective investigation into the death;
Unanimously, that it was not necessary to examine the case under Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment) or Article 6 (right to a fair hearing);
By 13 votes to four, that there had been no violation of Article 13 (right to an effective remedy);
Unanimously, that there had been no violation of Article 38 (adversarial examination of the case).
Some cops were fired, others were sentenced to 2, 3 years in prison, many others avoided any form of punishment, and i would be a liar if i'd state that justice has been fully served, but at least Italy TRIED to punish those who deserved to be punished. Partially was successful, partially failed

This happened in Genoa but could have happened in New York, in Oslo, In Moscow, anywhere: not that what happened in a 1st world country town called Seattle in 1999 was much less embarassing, with 157 individuals arrested OUTSIDE the no-protest zone, (obviously) released with no charges for lack of probable cause or hard evidence, paid with $250,000 for the disturb. Despite a damage estimated @ $20 million, Seattle police chief resigned; and what else happened? How many cops have been put in front of a court? And how many of them have been fired/sentenced/kicked in the ass/appointed a medal?

Cops are bullies with radioes and badges. Nothing else.
