Pictures From The Varvarin Bridge Bombing

Here are some color photos of victims of the bridge bombing in Varvarin.

The bombing of the Varvarin Bridge in Serbia occurred during the Kosovo War, a significant and controversial event that brought international attention to the conflict in the Balkans. On May 30, 1999, NATO aircraft targeted the bridge in the town of Varvarin as part of its campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which at the time included Serbia and Montenegro.

The Varvarin Bridge, a strategic crossing over the Morava River, was hit by NATO airstrikes during a busy time of day, resulting in significant civilian casualties. The attack caused the deaths of several people and injured many others. The bridge was heavily damaged, impacting the local community and transportation in the region.

NATO's intervention in the Kosovo War, including the bombing of the Varvarin Bridge, was part of its broader campaign to halt the humanitarian crisis and the conflict in Kosovo, predominantly between Serbian forces and the ethnic Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). NATO's actions were aimed at stopping the violence and human rights abuses occurring in Kosovo, but the campaign also resulted in civilian casualties and destruction of infrastructure in Serbia.

The Varvarin Bridge bombing became a subject of considerable controversy and debate. Critics of NATO's intervention pointed to this incident as an example of the problematic aspects of the campaign, highlighting the impact of military actions on civilians and civilian infrastructure. The incident raised questions about the conduct of warfare, the distinction between military and civilian targets, and the responsibility of international forces during interventions.

Re: Pictures From The Varvarin Bridge Bombing

Here's a bit more from Varvarin's wiki page:

Quote:
To this date[when?], NATO has refused to release further details of the airstrike – specifically the nationality of the attacking planes. In a public statement made by NATO spokesman Jamie Shea on 31 May 1999, he declared the Varvarin bridge a legitimate military target. No explanations or other statements have been issued by NATO since then.
Hard to explain why NATO would attack a target with no military value. These wars in the Balkans were confusing when I'd hear about them on the news while growing up. I'm learning about them now, and every side involved seems to have something cruel about them.

Great post. Hope nobody minds the thread necromancy ;)

That's fucked up! I do want to study this war now, in any case.
