Pictures From The Kent State Shootings - May 4, 1970

A tragic event unfolded at Kent State University on May 4, 1970, when Ohio National Guard troops opened fire on unarmed students during a peace rally. This rally was part of nationwide protests against the U.S. military's expansion into Cambodia and the Vietnam War. In a matter of seconds, 28 guardsmen fired around 67 shots, resulting in the deaths of four students: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Glenn Miller, Sandra Lee Scheuer, and William Knox Schroeder. Nine others were injured, one suffering permanent paralysis. The shootings instantly ignited nationwide student strikes, with over four million students walking out in protest. This incident marked a pivotal moment in American history, intensifying the already heated debate over the Vietnam War and changing public opinion on the U.S.'s role in the conflict.

The Pulitzer-winning photograph of Jeffery Miller's body is here:

The original article incorrectly states that these are three of the four dead, they aren't.

Yeah, I was surprised myself that I'd never heard of it, as I'm somewhat of a school-shooting aficionado.

Rough times. Sadly, much of patriotic America at the time disdained the protests and were glad that the "bums" had finally gotten what the deserved.

This was a huge deal. I finished my enlistment in the National Guard and we received training and briefings based on the mistakes make by those soldiers. The officer in charge of the company that fired was a real idiot. Many of the soldiers started shooting because they thought the initial gun shots came from the students. Sad sad deal.

How old are you? How can you not know about Kent State? Then, without knowing anything about the incident, how can you possibly make a statement about what "patriotic Americans" felt at the time???

Interesting in that 3 of the 4 students killed that day were Jewish. I guess they make the best kind of radicals - left and right.

21. And you can read plenty of old news articles and commentaries about the response of the people. For example, three days before the shooting, President Nixion said, "You see these bums, you know, blowing up the campuses..." and later, following Kent State, Nixon clarified, "And when students on university campuses burn buildings, when they engage in violence, when they break up furniture, when they terrorize their fellow students and terrorize the faculty, then I think "bums" is perhaps too kind a word to apply to that kind of person. Those are the kind I was referring to."

Also, I know a lot about Kent State now. I learned about it, actually, on Sept 11, 2015, I went on a massive research hunt on 9/11 that led me to Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs that led me to Kent State. Before then, I'd never heard of it.
