The Hillsborough disaster, which claimed 97 lives and left hundreds injured, unfolded during a football match at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England, on April 15, 1989. Mistakes made by the police were primarily responsible for the tragedy.

An FA Cup semifinal match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was the occasion, expected to draw over 53,000 fans to the sold-out venue. To manage crowd behavior, fans of both teams were directed to enter from different sides of the stadium. Liverpool supporters holding standing terrace tickets were directed to use the Leppings Lane entrance. A bottleneck formed due to limited turnstiles, with around 10,100 fans outside by 2:30 PM, just 30 minutes before kickoff.

To ease congestion, Yorkshire Police Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, with limited experience in managing soccer matches at Hillsborough, approved the opening of exit gate C at about 2:52 PM. Roughly 2,000 fans entered through that gate, overwhelming the already crowded pens 3 and 4. A crush ensued, with tragic consequences.

Initial attributions of unruly fan behavior and gate C being forced open proved erroneous. An independent panel in 2012 uncovered a police cover-up and found no evidence of alcohol or disorderly conduct as contributing factors. It concluded that better rescue efforts could have saved many lives.

In 2016, a jury determined that the 96 victims were "unlawfully killed." Criminal charges were filed in 2017, but only Graham Mackrell, the stadium safety officer, was convicted in 2019 for inadequate turnstile provisions.

im sorry for those who lost their lives but it wasnt just the cops to blame,i was there that day and couldnt move through the streets for "fans" that turned up without tickets,those outside wanting a free game were to blame too,yeah the cops knew about what they did I.E turning up at different grounds to get in for nothing and the pubs around hillsborough were still packed with supporters at 15 mins before kick off and making their way down to the ground after kick off too making it almost impossible for the ambulances to get through,blame the police by all means for the ineptitude and the cover up but some of the blame should be taken on by those who turned up without tickets too but that will never be spoken about,on another note,those fences were there because of the violence that occured at other grounds,Hysell for one but then again the liverpool fans wernt guilty there too,RIP those who died but you dont hear the Bradford fans going on about those who died in their disaster,let them rest and move on

The thing that pisses me off the most about what happened at Hillsborough, is the chief of police that was proven a few months ago to have lied about facts, he only got made to resign last year?

So he got to carry on working for 20 years on the pay roll and NOW he has to resign? fuck him, he should of been sacked 20 years ago and not been able to carry on earning money and getting a decent pension the dirty cunt
