Pictures From The End of Schutzstaffel
The notorious Schutzstaffel (SS), a paramilitary organization under the Nazi regime, began its disintegration in 1945, signaling the collapse of one of World War II's most feared entities. As the Nazi state crumbled and Allied forces advanced, some SS officers sought to negotiate a separate peace with the western Allies in a futile attempt to continue their struggle against the Soviet Union. In the war's final months, the SS persisted in its brutal campaign against regime enemies. The last five months of the war saw a staggering increase in concentration camp deaths, with around 350,000 of the 1.2 million total prisoners succumbing to starvation, disease, and SS-perpetrated violence. The period was also marked by the infamous “death marches,” where prisoners were forced to march under harsh conditions, resulting in high fatality rates. As Soviet troops advanced, SS atrocities extended to Gestapo and Kripo prisons, with officials often slaughtering remaining prisoners. These massacres, fueled by racial hatred and revenge, continued until the war's last days. The end of the SS was marked by the downfall of its leaders. Heinrich Himmler, a key figure in the Nazi hierarchy, was formally relieved of his duties and later committed suicide after being captured by Soviet troops. Other high-ranking SS leaders either met similar fates, assumed new identities, or fled to other continents. |

You know what would have been even better? If they had stopped in mid-swing and let him be apprehended by Allied forces to face justice. Humanity in the face of inhumanity.
