leaving someone 2 hours in a shower and not hearing him scream sounds unbelievable to me being just accidental. Bet he lied about checking the shower temp first.

The Miami Herald's 2014 investigation that prompted the County's investigation reported intentional torture.

The office of the Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle released a close-out memo on Friday saying there was no evidence to support filing charges of murder or manslaughter.

"The evidence fails to show that any correctional officer acted in reckless disregard of Rainey's life," the close-out memo said.

After the 72-page memo was released on the afternoon of St. Patrick's Day, Rainey's older brother, Andre Chapman, said in a press release that it hurts him every day "thinking about the torture and the pain" his brother "felt in the last moments of his life."

The shower had been deliberately modified by the officers so they alone could regulate the temperature from outside. Inmates were purposefully taken there for punishment. Extremely hot water or freezing cold. It was locked from outside and not very roomy. Intended for one person use.

Darren Rainey was an inmate at a Miami Dade Corrections facility. He was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and was receiving treatment.

Darren was a Muslim and took solace in reading his Koran, the guards one day took it upon themselves to take and throw away his Koran, it was noted that Darren's behaviour changed significantly after this event.

He was in his cell and decided to wipe excrement all over himself as what could only be deemed as a protest. A guard by the name of Roland Clarke was told to take him to the showers to get cleaned up. Clarke walked past two sets of showers and put Darren in a shower where Clarke could control the temperature of the water. It's a known fact that that specific shower was used as punishment as the water could be scalding hot or ice cold depending on the guards whim.

Darren was left in the showers for two hours, other inmates heard him screaming to be let out but he was ignored. Clarke returned two hours later to find Darren face up and very dead. The guards noted that his skin was coming off in clumps and he seemed to have been burned.

To this day nobody has been held responsible for his death, the official report says it was accidental due to the medication he was taking and the skin coming off his body was due to natural decomposition. His family received compensation later on.

Clarke resigned as a prison guard in July 2014 after a Miami Herald investigation into Rainey's death raised an international outcry. Prosecutors later declined to charge the guard with a crime, though, and he quickly found work with the Miami Gardens Police Department as a patrol officer.

The fucking bastards got away with it.
