Muammar Gaddafi Death Pictures
Muammar Gaddafi, the long-time ruler of Libya, was killed on October 20, 2011, in his hometown of Sirte, amid the Libyan Civil War. Gaddafi, who had ruled Libya since a coup in 1969, was 69 years old at the time of his death. Gaddafi's death occurred after he was captured by rebel forces during the Battle of Sirte, the final major confrontation of the Libyan Civil War. The conflict had begun in February 2011, as part of the wider Arab Spring movement, with widespread protests against Gaddafi's regime escalating into a full-blown civil war. NATO forces intervened in March 2011, enforcing a no-fly zone and conducting airstrikes against Gaddafi's forces. The circumstances of Gaddafi's death were chaotic and violent. After his convoy was attacked by NATO airstrikes as it attempted to flee Sirte, Gaddafi and several of his loyalists took refuge in a drain under a road. They were later found by rebel fighters, and Gaddafi was captured, beaten, and killed. The exact details of his death were subject to controversy and speculation, with various accounts of how he sustained his fatal injuries.
