Muammar Gadaffi Death Videos
Muammar Gaddafi, the long-time ruler of Libya, was killed on October 20, 2011, in his hometown of Sirte, amidst the Libyan Civil War. Gaddafi, who had seized power in a 1969 coup and ruled Libya for over four decades, was 69 years old at the time of his death. His fall from power and eventual death marked the end of one of the longest-serving regimes in modern history. In February 2011, a revolt against Gaddafi's rule began as part of the Arab Spring, a series of anti-government protests and uprisings in the Arab world. The conflict in Libya escalated into a full-blown civil war, with NATO forces intervening in March 2011 under a United Nations mandate to protect civilians. Gaddafi was captured by rebel forces in Sirte, his last stronghold, after a NATO airstrike hit his convoy. Video footage emerged showing Gaddafi being dragged from a drain where he was hiding, beaten by rebels, and then killed. His body was displayed in a commercial freezer in the city of Misrata before being buried in an undisclosed location in the Libyan desert. |
