Mohamed Anwar Sadat Assassinated By Egyptian Extremists
Mohamed Anwar Sadat, the third President of Egypt, was assassinated on October 6, 1981, in a shocking act of violence that reverberated across the world. Sadat, born on December 25, 1918, was attending a military parade in Cairo to commemorate the eighth anniversary of Egypt's crossing of the Suez Canal during the Yom Kippur War when he was killed. He was 62 years old. The assassination was carried out by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a militant Islamist group opposed to Sadat's policies, including his signing of the Camp David Accords with Israel in 1979, which made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel. The peace agreement was seen as a betrayal by many in the Arab world and angered Islamist extremists within Egypt. As Sadat stood to receive a salute, a group of military officers in the parade broke ranks and approached the president's stand, throwing grenades and firing assault rifles. The attack left Sadat and several others dead and injured numerous attendees, including foreign dignitaries. |

Re: Mohamed Anwar Sadat Assassinated By Egyptian Extremists
Islamic Jihad's initial terrorist operation was the murder of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in October 1981. Sadat was ostensibly murdered because he had reneged on his promise to institute Sha'aria law, because he had made peace with Israel and because of his ties with the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassi...of_Anwar_Sadat |
