Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers who were convicted of the 1989 murders of their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. The case garnered widespread media attention and became a national sensation, partly due to the gruesome nature of the killings and the affluent background of the family.

On the night of August 20, 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were found shot to death in their home. Initially, the murders appeared to be a mafia hit, but suspicion soon fell on the Menendez brothers. After a period of lavish spending following their parents' deaths, Lyle and Erik were arrested in 1990.

During the trial, the defense argued that the brothers had suffered years of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their father, with their mother being complicit or turning a blind eye. They claimed that the murders were a desperate act of self-defense. The prosecution, however, portrayed the brothers as greedy and cold-blooded killers who murdered their parents to inherit their wealth.

The first trials, held separately for each brother, both ended in hung juries in 1994. However, in a second trial, which received extensive media coverage, the jury found Lyle and Erik Menendez guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in 1996. They were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
