Re: Kiss Nightclub Fire: Pictures of the 245 Dead in Brazil Nightclub Fire
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — A blaze at a Brazilian nightclub left more than 230 people dead early Sunday morning, in what appears to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade. More than 100 others were injured when the fire broke out at 2 a.m. at a nightclub called Kiss in Santa Maria, Brazil, at the southern tip of the country near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay. Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello told the Associated Press that the toll had risen to 233 with the death of a hospitalized victim. Officials earlier had counted 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in Santa Maria. The club was hosting an event for a local university, according to local media outlets, and most of the attendees were students of that school, the Federal University of Santa Maria in the southern state Rio Grande do Sul. Faulty pyrotechnics may have sparked the fast-spreading blaze at a performance packed with local university students.Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, started playing at 2:15 a.m. "and we had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning" "It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless, we never had any trouble with it. "When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working" He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely. Michele Pereira told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that she was near the stage and that the fire broke out after band members lit flares. "The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward. At that point the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak but in a matter of seconds it spread," Pereira said. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.liveleak.com/ll_embed?f=29db88424b48" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The world's most deadly nightclub fires: 2009: Santika Club, Bangkok, Thailand - sparked by fireworks; 66 killed 2009: Lame Horse Club, Perm, Russia - sparked by fireworks; 150 killed 2004: Cromagnon Republic Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina - flare starts fire which kills 194 2003: The Station, Rhode Island, US - sparked by fireworks; 100 killed 2000: Luoyang dance hall fire, China - fire blamed on welders kills 309 1996: Ozone Disco Club, Quezon City, Philippines - 160 killed 1990: Happy Land, New York, US - arson kills 89 at unlicensed club 1977: Beverly Hills Supper Club, Southgate, Kentucky - 165 killed 1970: Club 5-7, Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, France - 146 killed; 1942: Cocoanut Grove, Boston, US - 492 killed |

Good post, I remember reading about the coconut grove fire in great detail when I was a kid. I've always had a keen interest in these types of fires.

Re: Kiss Nightclub Fire: Pictures of the 245 Dead in Brazil Nightclub Fire
That was the fire in Rhode Island, Meg. The doors were locked to keep people from sneaking in. I guess a couple of big bouncers was too expensive! I'm surprised that many people showed up to see Great White! I was at a crowded club underground last night and I was thinking about that fire in RI. Fortunately, no pyro, and I was close to one exit and knew where three others were. I woke up today to hear about the fire in Brazil. |
